agnosticism

Literally, 'without knowledge'. A philosophical position which, simply stated, claims that it is impossible to know whether such a thing as 'God' exists. Agnostics differ from atheists in that atheists deny the need for postulating the existence of a 'God' or 'gods' while agnostics state that they just don't have enough evidence to say whether or not such a thing as 'God' exists. --Henry W.Targowski (in Mark/Space , 1994).

Term coined by T.H.Huxley.
