alchemy

The transmutation of elements.

The classic quest of the alchemists was to transform 'lead' into 'gold'. This goal was nothing less than the search for the 'philosopher's stone'.

In modern times, the transmutation of one element into another has been accomplished under laboratory conditions, but at great expense. The imminent arrival of nanotechnology might very well make alchemy an inexpensive and common process.
