He participated in the creation of global analysis, a new branch of mathematics, while teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University, and Princeton University. He has been at the University of California at Santa Cruz since 1968, where he has been a leader in the new theories of nonlinear dynamics, chaos, and bifurcation.
